Show Notes

Deanna and Kelly get real in sharing the biggest mistakes they’ve made in their entrepreneurial journey, giving small business advice to other mompreneurs to help inform and empower them to pursue their dreams. There is no room for perfection in business, as mistakes will inevitably be made by all of us. The lonely road can feel even more isolating when dealing with our missteps.

Our mistakes were costly, both financially and emotionally. We share them with the hope that you can learn from our experience as you navigate your own path. From business coaches to childcare, we discuss what we wish we’d know then, and how it can help you now.

What we discuss - don’t miss it!

  • Making mistakes is a normal part of the business journey.
  • Why the particular struggles of business and motherhood are a collective burden.
  • How working with a business coach could have saved Deanna from many of the costly mistakes she made with her nonprofit.
  • Why Kelly had to learn once, then twice, that having business agreements and partnerships in writing is non-negotiable.
  • How you can effectively work with friends and preserve your relationship.
  • Why paying yourself first is critical.
  • How avoiding adequate childcare as you grow your business cheats both you and your children.

QUOTES
"Your business may be unique, but you’re not alone in your struggles of business or motherhood."

“There is something inherently adventurous about the spirit of an entrepreneur. We feel like a maverick or a rock star if we do it on our own.”

“If you’re going to collaborate with a friend, if you care about that friendship, then you need to sign a contract.”

“Build your business in a way that the first person who gets paid is you.”

“Along with the rock star mentality, we also have a martyr mentality. ‘I need to sacrifice myself on the altar of this business by not paying myself, doing it on my own, and not asking for help with my children.’”

“[My 4 year-old son] has specific needs as a 4 year-old child and I have specific needs as an adult in business, and both of them are equally important and need to be cared for.”
